Robin Hood Airport Project

P N Daly Ltd successfully tendered for the £6.3 million utility infrastructure project to convert a former RAF airfield to an international commercial airport in February 2004. This was the first commercial airport to open in Britain in then last 30 years.

 The works involved replacing two 11 kV circuits and construction of a third supplying the terminal area. In addition 7 existing substations were refurbished, 6 new substation installed and two substation - generator units were also part of the works. The total length of cable laid was 18km. Approximately 7 km of LV network was also installed.

 Water main construction to the terminal and airside villages, involved the laying of 3.6 km of 250mm MDPE and Ductile Iron water main, with an additional 1.6 km of 180mm MDPE water main laid through the existing industrial estate, for use by existing and future customers. Part of these works included the construction of the airside fire fighting mains around the aircraft apron, and a 3.4 km 355mm 16 Bar HPPE fire main and 24 fire hydrants for the full length of the runway which was fed by two high pressure, high capacity fire pumps.

As part of the communications network a complete 4 way duct and pit system was constructed around the airfield to connect the control tower, fire station, terminal and ancillary equipment. All major communications for the airport were connected through this. In addition a new 4 way duct and pit system was constructed to connect the terminal to the BT network.

A new 1.6 km 400mm MDPE medium pressure gas supply was also constructed to supply gas to the terminal and future development areas of the site.

Other works on site included the diversion of the existing district heating mains, diversion of existing telecoms networks and the installation of 3 external 10,000 litre water tanks.

Works were completed in April 2005, allowing the airport to open on schedule.
