The Trafford Centre with its 1.4 million sq ft of shopping area was the biggest shopping centre in Europe and was the first major project to use the multi utility design and installation approach.
The PN Daly Ltd proposal was a multi utility solution with the underground utilities to be designed by one design team with a brief to ensure that excavation of trenches was kept to a minimum so that trenches could be shared by all utilities. The second proposal and crucial part of the proposal was that all installation teams needed to be multi-skilled.
The multi utility approach was a great success. It ensured that the problems at Meadow Hall were not repeated at the Trafford Centre, where the one point of contact provided to Bovis smoothed out problems as they arose.
